It’s exciting starting a new exercise program, but there’s a drawback too – the after workout soreness that’s sure to follow. Also known as delayed onset muscle soreness, the discomfort is a normal reaction for muscles that have been challenged to do more than they’re accustomed to doing.

In a study published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers gave 27 men who hadn’t previously exercised either 1.8 grams of a fish oil supplement or a placebo. The men then performed a challenging lower body workout to suitably challenging their muscles. The results? The men who took fish oil complements had less soreness and were able to carry out their normal activities with less pain than the placebo group.

Using fish oils for soreness from working out makes perfect sense. The omega-3s in fish oils block inflammation, causing most of the pain that people experience after a challenging workout. Taking fish oils before exercising could reduce some of the inflammation people experience when they’ve challenged their muscles beyond their limits. Fish oils are like a natural anti-inflammatory for the weight lifter.
Other Benefits of Fish Oils
Using fish oils for preventing soreness from working out has other benefits as well. Fish oils help to lower the risk of heart disease and, possibly, some types of cancer. Their anti-inflammatory effects are being studied as a possible treatment for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Some studies show that omega-3s in fish oil also boost brain health and relieve depression and anxiety.
